The BBVA Foundation has awarded the XIII Frontiers of Knowledge Award in the Ecology and Biology category to Prof. Sandra Díaz, along with world reknown researchers Sandra Lavorel and Mark Westoby, for their extensive work in cataloging the functional traits of plants and their influence on the functioning of ecosystems, which has helped expanding the concept of biodiversity.

The BBVA Foundation highlighted “the pioneering work to discover, describe and coordinate the measurement of the functional characteristics of plants”, and that the so-called ‘trait ecology’ promoted by the three awardees “is improving the design and effectiveness of both biodiversity conservation efforts and predictive ecosystem models”.
