The Princess of Asturias Award highlights that Prof. Díaz contributed to the development of “a methodological tool to quantify the effects and benefits of plant biodiversity” and “the role of biodiversity in counteracting global warming.”

While receiving the award, Prof. Díaz highlighted the need to change the dominant world system of extraction and use of natural resources, in order to revert the damage made to the “fabric of life”, and be able to achieve sustainable development for all of society.
